The Outreach/Christian Justice Ministry has entered into a long-term partnership with one of the city’s most disadvantaged schools, East Leonard Elementary School. We have agreed to “adopt” the school, which is about a mile from our church. The school has a diverse student population, from Pre-K through Fifth Grade. It has an active and engaged teaching and administrative staff, hard-working parents and they are all overjoyed that we have chosen them to partner with.
To begin with, we are assembling a team of volunteers to serve as monthly helpers for the PBIS program (and rewards program for excellent behavior and academic performance). We are also looking for volunteers who can spend a couple hours a month helping with food service, sitting with children for 15-20 minutes as they read aloud, and other activities. There are opportunities to volunteer that are a couple hours a month to an hour a week.
Grand Rapids Public Schools requires a background check for all volunteers–a process that takes about 2-3 weeks. Download the form here.
