Rector Search Update, November 22, 2016
The Rector Search Team has been working hard to vet and interview the depth of candidates that have applied for our position. Having seventeen applicants was a wonderful dilemma to have! The committee has even met on weekends to spend time on the phone with interested candidates. Applications were received from a total of thirteen states and the team has learned so much form each and every one of them.
At this point there are four remaining priests to continue to get to know better. Discernment is quite the process as not only does this need to be a candidate that matches our needs and requirements, but we need to be the place where God is calling them as well. In addition to all that, we are hoping to find a rector who can speak to us and touch us spiritually. Please continue to pray for this as we get to the final and crucial last contacts.
The last contacts will include the completion of the reference checks and visits. We are looking at visiting in their home parishes and then bringing them to Grand Rapids to meet with our vestry. We are hopeful to have all of the visiting take place in the month of December in spite of the busy season. The goal is to have the call made by the first of the year.
Yours in Christ,
Judy Freeman and Baldwin Ogden
The Rector Search Committee is pleased to be ending the initial phase of the search process which has involved working with the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan to complete the information needed. Our Parish Profile is visible online and will also be available to you in hard copy.
The results of our congregational survey were used to create our profile and a report of this survey is also available for you. You will find a copy of it on the table at each entrance to the church for the next few Sundays. If you are unable to get out and would like a copy, just call the church and a member of the search team will deliver it to you.
We are so grateful to the 118 members who completed this survey. We had valuable information from a statistically significant number of parishioners that allowed Calvin College to help us identify common themes and needs for our next phase of parish life.
As you travel or know other Episcopal clergy, please take a copy of our profile and help us find viable candidates. We need to be proactive in this search and pray that we will have a cadre of candidates interested in St. Mark’s.
We will receive resumes from candidates through the months of August and September. The OTM Portfolio and additional inquiries should be addressed to the offices of the Diocese of Western Michigan. Please contact the Canon of the Ordinary, William Spaid, at 269-381-2710 or email@example.com
September and October will be interview months if we have our candidate pool determined. Our interviews will include Facetime phone conversations, visits and face to face meetings in Grand Rapids.
We plan to make our recommendations to the vestry so they may make a call in late December. As we learned at the beginning of this process this is a discernment process which will result in a call for a person and a parish. Once again, thank you for your assistance and continued prayers for the next phase of this process.
